Subvertisement

For my subvertisement, I went with an advertisement from Apple, for the iPhone 6. In what is in a way similar to Feed, I do not really like how tons of people in today’s world are so addicted to their phones. The original ad says, “iPhone 6: Because you deserve nothing less than the best.” Now, I do not have a terrible problem with their advertisement, as I realize they have to do their best to attract people to buy their product. However, I do not totally agree that people necessarily deserve to have an iPhone. I have always believed that you get what you work for. To address my main issue with the world addiction to iPhone’s, I changed the wording of the advertisement to, ”More addicting than ever.” Then, on the screen of the iPhone I put a drawing I found of someone holding a phone, and it looks as if it is becoming biologically attached to them, almost like what we see in Feed. All around me, I see people addicted to their phones. The average person supposedly checks their phone eighty-five times per day. I think that this addiction to phones is hurting people’s, especially young people’s, conversation skills. People will be at a party, and will pull out their phones and zone out from wherever they are as soon as they get a little bit bored. I am guilty of this myself. Sometimes I will see people pull out their phones while they are in the middle of a conversation with someone. People can’t even watch a movie in one sitting without being distracted by their phones. This is frustrating. People are never alone now today, and I don’t think that is a totally good thing. I think it is important that people have time where they are alone with themselves and their own thoughts.

  1. Brendan- I have noticed the same thing about cell phones and definitely about the loss of in-person communication.

  2. I think that was a good way to subvert the ad because it's totally true. Almost all of us are addicted to our phones in some form whether we realize it or not.

  4. I completely agree! Technology is so addictive and it's so easy to just stay connected and hide behind a computer screen than have actual human contact. It's sad. Your subvertisement looks so good!

  7. This was definitely a good use of photoshop, I liked the idea of the phone being biologically connecting to a human hand.

  8. Awesome job on your subvertisement! I like how you compared your subvertisement to the book. You did a nice job fitting the image on the phone screen. I agree with you I also believe our youth is becoming attached to electronics.
